5 Kidney Stone Prevention Tips | Tennessee Valley Urology Center

According to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney stones are on the rise. In fact, one in every 10 Americans are expected to experience kidney stones in their lifetime. Tennessee Valley Urology Center wants to share some tips you might not be aware of to help prevent kidney stones.

Drink plenty of water.
Staying well-hydrated is your first line of defense against kidney stones. Drinking enough water to urinate often helps keep your kidneys flushed and prevents mineral formation in your kidneys and urinary tract. Since losing water through your sweat causes you to urinate less frequently, you should pay special attention to replenishing your fluids during exercise or anytime you sweat a lot.

Combine calcium and oxalate-rich foods together during meals.
You might have heard that oxalate-rich foods like certain fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, grains, legumes, chocolate and tea will increase your risk of forming calcium oxalate kidney stones. But most of these kidney stones form when oxalate binds to calcium when urine is produced by the kidneys. If you eat these foods together, the oxalate and calcium will more likely bind to one another in your stomach and intestines first.

Moderate your oxalate consumption.
Some people who are especially prone to calcium oxalate stones will benefit from a reduction of the foods highest in oxalate, like peanuts, rhubarb, spinach, beets, chocolate and sweet potatoes.

Don’t skimp on calcium.
Patients prone to kidney stones sometimes reduce their calcium intake and then wonder why they’re still getting stones. But a diet low in calcium can increase your risk of developing kidney stones. Instead, reduce sodium in your diet and like we told you above, pair your calcium-rich foods and oxalate-rich foods together.

Have an action plan.
Studies show that having one kidney stone increases your chances of having another. That means that after your first stone, you should make lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of repeat episodes. A urinary specialist will help you create an action plan which might include prescription medication and a healthy nutrition plan aimed at reducing stones.

These are just some of the steps you can take to help reduce your likelihood of kidney stone formation.
