Are You Experiencing the Symptoms of a UTI? | Tennessee Valley Urology Center

Did you know that more than 3 million UTIs are diagnosed among Americans each year? These infections, also called urinary tract infections, are extremely common.

As part of Bladder Health Month this November, our team at Tennessee Valley Urology Center wants to offer you tips on how to prevent a urinary tract infection from occurring in the first place.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A urinary tract infection is defined as an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system, which include the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.

While anyone can be diagnosed with a UTI, certain groups are at a higher risk, including elderly women, pregnant women or anyone who has a pre-existing urinary tract abnormality.

Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include:

  • Burning feeling when urinating
  • Having a frequency or urgency to pee
  • Cloudy, dark urine
  • Blood in urine
  • Feeling tired
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen

Fortunately, there are steps you can take in order to prevent a UTI from happening in the first place.

How to Prevent a UTI

Your first and best defense against UTIs is to ensure you’re drinking plenty of water to remain properly hydrated. This keeps your urinary system and bladder operating at their best.

Steer clear of scented feminine hygiene products, which can irritate the urinary tract. Always be sure to wipe from front to back after using the restroom. And don’t hold it in when you need to use the restroom, since doing so can irritate the bladder.
