Certain risk factors cannot be mitigated due to genetics, age, ethnicity, or another predisposition. Other risk factors may be avoided or reduced with certain lifestyle changes. Eat Right
Obesity is a common risk factor for many of the diseases we treat here at the Urology Center. That means it’s important to eat right. Everyone would do better avoiding excessive red meat, high-fat dairy foods and alcohol. Also stay hydrated with plenty of water, as this helps curb cravings to eat when you’re not truly hungry.

Know Your Numbers
It’s important for everyone to know their weight, BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Exercise Regularly
The CDC recommends the following exercise guidelines:
* 30 minutes of exercise daily for all adults to maintain their current weight.
* 60 minutes of exercise daily for adults who want to lose some weight.
* 90 minutes of exercise daily for adults who have been significantly overweight or who have lost weight and wish to maintain that weight loss long-term.
Quit Smoking
Even long-term smokers can benefit from quitting smoking. Smoking is a risk factor for many diseases including high blood pressure. If you smoke, quit now. If you don’t smoke, don’t start.
Get Routine Checkups
Some conditions and diseases cannot be prevented. It’s important to maintain regular exams so you have options if you do develop a disease. Get an annual exam even if you don’t have any symptoms of illness.
