Tips For Traveling With OAB | Tennessee Valley Urology Center

Planning to do some traveling this summer? While most of us look forward to summer travels, for those with overactive bladder (OAB), the thought might be a little scary. Tennessee Valley Urology Center has gathered up some tips to help you plan ahead and avoid unwanted problems.

  • When planning a road trip, plan a pit stop every two hours. Some folks with OAB can get away with a bathroom break every four hours. The main point is that you plan to give yourself the breaks you need.

  • Traveling by air? Try not to drink anything but water two hours before boarding. You’ll want an empty bladder since changes in cabin pressure coupled with seat belts can put extra pressure on your bladder. When booking your flight, try to get an aisle seat so you have easier access to the bathroom.

  • Traveling abroad to a non-English speaking country? Be sure to learn the word for “toilet.” If you’ve got cell phone service, consider using an app like Toilet Finder.

  • Pack your bag with plenty of supplies like absorbent pads, clean underwear, plastic bags for wet clothing, and a barrier cream to use after urinating.

  • It’s a good idea to talk to your urologist a few weeks before your travel. They may suggest bladder training or even medications to help reduce your urgency to go.

Overactive bladder can be embarrassing, but you’re far from alone. With a little help and guidance you can manage your symptoms with dignity and less worry about facing the unexpected. Happy Travels!
