Turn to Our Urological Team for Care | Tennessee Valley Urology Center

Dentist? Check! Orthopedist? Check! General physician? Check! Urologist? Huh?

While you might not think of a urologist as a part of your healthcare team, our team at Tennessee Valley Urology Center wants to share some insight into the benefits of seeing one.

Let’s first step through some basics.

What Is a Urologist?

A urologist is a physician who has specialized training related to the urinary tract and male reproductive system. You are usually referred to a urologist when you are dealing with a urological condition relating to the bladder, urethra, ureters, kidneys and/or adrenal glands.

You may recognize some of the most common issues urologists treat:

Urinary Incontinence

When you lose the ability to control your bladder, it is called urinary incontinence. This medical condition can appear for a number of reasons, including the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles due to pregnancy.

While we often think of it as a female issue, incontinence also affects men.

Male Infertility

When having difficulty conceiving, the difficulties may stem from an issue with the male reproductive system.

Beyond medical conditions, men can also experience damage to the male reproductive system, which can lead to problems when trying to conceive. Fortunately, surgery can sometimes help to repair the damage to allow a great success rate of conceiving naturally.

Certain Cancers

If you are diagnosed with a urologic cancer (like bladder cancer) or cancer within the male reproductive system (such as prostate cancer), a urologist can play an important role in your treatment plan.

However, because other cancers are known to affect the urinary system, urologists might also be called on to assist in the treatment of other cancers, as well!

Bladder Prolapse

Bladder prolapse occurs when your pelvic floor muscles and tissues are unable to support the organs located in and around your pelvis. As a result, the organs drop from where they should be located in your body, causing issues.
