Do I Have an Irritated Bladder?

There are a few symptoms you need to watch out for that could be a sign that you are suffering from an irritated bladder, including:

  • Frequent need to go to restroom
  • Low-grade fever
  • Tenderness in abdomen
  • Abdomen pain
  • Pain when peeing
  • Burning during urination
  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Cloudy, bloody or foul-smelling urine

The most common reasons behind an irritated bladder are interstitial cystitis, urinary tract infection and bladder cancer, with bladder cancer being the most rare.

Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible when symptoms arise so that you can obtain a diagnosis and treatment plan sooner rather than later.

Fortunately, especially if your bladder irritation is due to urinary incontinence, there are a number of things you can try to help soothe it:

Drink Plenty of Water

Beverages with high amounts of caffeine have been known to irritate the bladder and can increase your risk of dehydration.

Therefore, the best thing you can do for your bladder (and your overall health) is to drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration, as well as a bladder infection.

Get Plenty of Magnesium

Magnesium-rich foods can help to improve nerve function and reduce bladder muscle spasms. When you can, grab for a handful of almonds for a snack, and be sure to include green vegetables, fish and whole grains in your diet to improve your bladder health!

Skip Irritating Foods

While certain foods can help ease irritation, others will contribute to bladder irritation. Steer clear of spicy and acidic foods, such as peppers, tomatoes and onions, along with processed and smoky meats. All are known for making bladder irritation worse.
